A body has been found in the search for a missing hillwalker in Mayo.

Geoff Rowden, 38, from Dublin had been missing since last Tuesday.

Rescuers said the body was recovered on the mountain ridge of Mweelrea Mountain.

It has been taken to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar for a post-mortem examination,

The missing father-of-two told his family he intended to camp in the Doolough Valley area on Tuesday night after a ridge climb of Connacht's highest peak.

He never returned to his car where his tent was also found near the base of the mountain.

Gardaí assisted by rescue teams from all over Ireland, hillwalking clubs and members of the public took part.
