Gardaí are warning that high-visibility checkpoints will be in operation on roads around the country this weekend, as the number of road deaths continues to climb.

154 people have lost their lives on the country's roads so far in 2013, an increase of 14 on this time last year.

Checkpoints will operate during one-hour timeslots at locations across Garda districts.

Gardaí say the "high visibility enforcement aims to modify driver behaviour, identify breaches of all road traffic legislation and make the roads safer for all".
