The total number of trips to Ireland between July and September this year rose 7.8% to 2,261,000, according to the Central Statistics Office.
That is up 164,300 compared to the same period in 2011.
Figures from the CSO, showed trips by North American residents to Ireland increased by 13.6% to 415,000 in the same period.
Trips by residents of European countries, other than the UK, increased by 1.2% to 786,200. Trips to Ireland from the rest of the world rose 24.5% to 155,000.
Trips by UK residents increased by 9.0% to 904,700.
Meanwhile, the total number of overseas trips made by Irish residents during July to September increased by 1.5% to 2,032,600.
The total number of trips to Ireland has increased by 6.4% from the start of this year to September 2013, when compared with the same period in 2012.
