World 50km race walking champion Rob Heffernan's gold medal was stolen when his car was broken into in Dublin this morning, but was later recovered by gardaí.
The world champion was in Dublin to receive a sports award.
He was due to have a physiotherapy session before going for a run with his manager, Derry McVeigh, but discovered that his car had been broken into and his medal taken.
Mr McVeigh had received a call a short time earlier to say the medal had been stolen and was being offered for sale.
Gardaí mounted a sting operation and the medal was recovered.
Heffernan tweeted his thanks to gardaí for the recovery of his medal this afternoon.
He also retweeted a picture with the medal and with detectives Niamh Coates and Niall Hodgins of Mountjoy Garda Station, who were involved in the recovery operation.
"I'm delighted... It was like CSI," Heffernan told RTÉ.
