A man has been seriously injured following a suspected gas explosion at a house in Derry last night.

The house in Bonds Street was "extensively damaged" following the blast shortly after 10.35pm.

A number of residents were evacuated from the area while firefighters tackled flames.

A PSNI spokesman said: "Police in Derry remain at the scene of a suspected gas explosion which occurred last night.

"The house is extensively damaged and a man has been taken to hospital for treatment for serious injuries as a result of the explosion."

He added: "Police and Northern Ireland Fire Service are working to make the surrounding area safe so the road can be reopened and evacuated residents can return to their homes."
