Hundreds of homes were left without power for a time after a severe weather event in the east Galway area last night.

ESB Networks said houses in the Clonfert and Banagher areas were worst affected.

Repair crews worked into the night to identify dangers caused by fallen power lines.

Work on restoring power resumed this morning, with over 600 homes reconnected.

A clean-up operation is under way in the areas hit by the strong winds.

A number of trees were uprooted, farm buildings were damaged and several gravestones were toppled at the cemetery adjoining Clonfert Cathedral.

Members of the public are advised not go near fallen wires, but should contact ESB Networks on 1850-372-999.
