Minister of State at the Department of Education Ciarán Cannon has said the education system has failed people in respect of the Irish language.

Speaking on the TG4 programme Róisín, Minister Cannon said the language was a priority for him and he hoped it was turning a corner.

He was responding to criticism from the manager of Irish summer college Coláiste Lurgan.

Micheál Ó Foighil said it was scandalous that so much taxpayers' money was being spent on a project that has failed completely.

Mr Ó Foighil said the method of teaching Irish in schools needed to be radically changed.
