Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney has announced plans to cap farm payment to some of the country’s largest land owners.

He was speaking at the second day of the National Ploughing Championships in Ratheniska in Co Laois.

Mr Coveney said 60 farmers and other individuals would be affected if his proposals to cap payment at a maximum of €150,000 go ahead.

Separately, Mr Coveney launched a new Winter Fodder and Financial Survival Guide, which aims to give farmers advice on managing fodder and managing cash flow over the winter.

Teagasc's Dr Tom Kelly said farmers should do their own fodder budget and "then plan for the next six months and use the information to explore the best options for their own farms".
