Five people have been arrested following an outbreak of violence involving feuding Traveller families after incidents in Co Longford and Co Westmeath.

Gardaí said at least three people were injured in stabbings which took place after an incident at a wake in Co Longford.

There were further outbreaks of violence in Athlone and Mullingar before gardaí were called to the Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar where a disturbance was taking place.

A team of 15 gardaí restored order at the hospital and five arrests were made.

It is expected that a number of people will appear in court in connection with the incidents.
