Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan has announced the Government will not be proceeding with the introduction of a packaging levy.

The minister said the proposed levy would have generated costs to the legislative process, public administration and business - with few identifiable additional environmental benefits.

The charge would have applied to producers.

Mr Hogan said the decision was made "given our very successful packaging recovery and recycling performance to date in Ireland".

The minister also published a report on the issue, which is the second report to be published as part of the Review of the Producer Responsibility Initiative model in Ireland.
