A man in his 40s has died following an incident in the river Avoca near the Bridgewater Shopping Centre in Arklow, Co Wicklow.

He was taken from the water but was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two men entered the river across from the Marina Village apartments complex, where it is believed they both lived.

One managed to climb back out of the water to raise the alarm.

There was initial confusion about how many others were in the river and so a full-scale search was launched.

Dublin Coast Guard was alerted at 4.25am and assisted Arklow Lifeboat and the Coast Guard in the operation.
