The deployment of Irish troops to the Golan Heights has been delayed.

The United Nations contacted the Defence Forces last night and asked for the deployment to be delayed by two to three weeks.

The delay is blamed on administrative reasons, which include getting clearance for personnel and equipment to cross the border between Lebanon and Syria.

The first group of Irish troops were due to leave Ireland today. They are not expected to leave now until later this month.

The Defence Forces has said that all 115 Irish soldiers are still due to be on the ground on the Golan Heights by the end of the month.
