Gardaí have renewed an appeal for witnesses to a fatal hit-and-run in Co Donegal in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Alan McSherry was walking home from Bundoran when he was struck by a car.

The 48-year-old had been celebrating a friend's birthday in the town and was making the short journey to Boyannagh just over the border in Co Leitrim.

He was found lying in the road with serious injuries just after 5am on Sunday morning.

Mr McSherry was discovered by his wife who went to collect him when she realised he may have been having difficulty getting a taxi home.

Car parts were found strewn across the road near where Mr McSherry was found.

Mr McSherry was originally from Liverpool, but had moved to the area with his wife about 20 years ago.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Ballyshannon Garda Station on 071-9851102 or Garda Confidential Line 1800-666-111.

A car examined as part of the investigation has been ruled out of the inquiry.
