PSNI says arms haul in east Belfast largest in years in Northern Ireland

The PSNI says a weapons find in Belfast is one of the biggest in Northern Ireland in recent years.

Over 800 rounds of ammunition and 16 modern semi-automatic handguns were discovered during a search of a wooded area in east Belfast.

It is believed the arms were buried in the ground.

Detectives said the find has thwarted the attempts of criminals to inflict death, injury and misery.

DUP Stormont Assembly member for the area Jimmy Spratt said the discovery of such a large quantity of handguns is worrying.

British army ordnance and weapons experts were involved in the search in the Castlereagh area, part of which was sealed off.

The guns and munitions are undergoing forensic tests.
