Gardai investigating the murder of a 21-year-old man in west Dublin are still trying to establish a motive for the fatal shooting.

The victim has been named locally as Dean Johnson.

It is believed he was involved in a confrontation with a number of men on Harelawn Green in Neilstown early yesterday.

Detectives are seeking information the movements of a car from which three men were seen leaving.

It was found burned-out after the shooting just after midnight on Friday.

The black Vauxhall Vectra with tinted windows had registration plates 99-DL-7997.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who was in the Harelawn Green or Collinstown Crescent area on Friday night or Saturday morning to them at Ronanstown station on 01-666 7700.

An incident room has been set up to spearhead the investigation. 

The victim was shot several times in the head and body.
