Dawn Fresh Foods is to close its production facility in Fethard, Co Tipperary, with the loss of 104 jobs.

Dawn Fresh is involved in the production of frozen and chilled products for the UK and Irish markets.

The company has blamed a steep decline in sales over the past number of years, along with the cost of raw materials and sterling exchange rates, for the closure.

The directors of the firm said despite restructuring efforts the company has continued to be loss-making.

The plant will be closed on a phased basis, with all redundancies complete by the end of the year.

In a statement, Dawn Foods said: "After lengthy thought and consideration and exploration of all avenues, including a 30-day consultation period with staff, it has become evident that a viable rescue plan is not achievable."

The company has operated in the Fethard area for more than 30 years.
