Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Pat Rabbitte has said he is concerned at the continuing decline in commercial revenue reaching RTÉ.

Publishing its annual report and group financial statement for 2012, RTÉ reported a net deficit for the year of €65 million.

RTÉ generated an operating profit of €2.2m, despite a continued decline in both commercial and licence fee income.

The public service broadcaster said the operating profit was driven by reductions to operating costs of €18.4m.

However, RTÉ reported an overall net deficit of €65m for 2012.

A large chunk of this was made up by a €46m restructuring charge, as a result of which staffing levels were reduced by a more than a fifth from 2008 levels.

Director General Noel Curran said that the full effect of the restructuring will be felt this year, underlining RTÉ's commitment to break even in 2013.

Responding to the report, Minister Rabbitte repeated that he has made it clear to RTÉ that this was a commitment that had to be met.
