A Swedish politician who posted an online photo of his new Liverpool FC tattoo says he will take more care in future after revealing considerably more than he had intended.

Lars Ohly, the former leader of Sweden's Left Party, posted a picture of the English soccer club Liverpool's liver bird tattooed on his leg.

He failed to notice however that his private parts were on view in the background.

The Swedish MP quickly removed the picture after posting it Wednesday on Instagram, but could not prevent an avalanche of comments in social media.

Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt of the rival Moderate Party jibed: "Congratulations - finally, after all these years you have made a genuine public breakthrough."

Mr Ohly made light of the embarrassment, but said he would be more careful when he posts online in future.
