Met Éireann has confirmed that the majority of the country is officially experiencing a drought.

20 of the 25 national weather stations have reported rainfall of less than 0.1mm over the past 15 days.

Five areas of the northwest experienced rain showers on 7 July or last night, which excludes them from the drought categorisation.

They are: Belmullet in Co Mayo, Malin Head in Co Donegal, Finner in Co Donegal, Newport in Co Mayo, and Claremorris in Co Mayo.

The weather is predicted to become gradually cooler next week, with heavy showers or thunderstorms forecast for parts of Connacht and Donegal today.
