The family of Savita Halappanavar has welcomed the Dáil vote on the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill.

Ms Halappanavar’s father, AS Yalgi thanked the Government for passing the bill, which allows for abortion in limited circumstances.

"It was our demand that at least for life saving purposes, the life saving abortion bill is very essential.

"This was our demand. I really thank them who have passed the bill," he said.

TDs voted by 127 to 31 in favour of the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill.

The bill will begin its passage through the Seanad on Monday afternoon.

If there are no amendments to the legislation, it will then go to President Michael D Higgins for signature.

President Higgins can then decide to sign the bill into law or, after consulting the Council of State, refer it to the Supreme Court to check its constitutionality.
