A 12-year-old boy has drowned while swimming in the sea off Youghal in Co Cork.

It is understood the boy was swimming at Youghal beach when he was caught in the changing tide and swept into the harbour.

The Coast Guard was first to arrive on the scene, along with a rescue helicopter from Waterford.

The boy was taken from the water and efforts were made to resuscitate him.

He was airlifted to Cork airport and transferred by ambulance to Cork University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
