The Department of Communications is issuing a final tender for the introduction of post codes, with the system due to be up and running by September of next year.

Minister for Communications Pat Rabbitte informed Cabinet colleagues that his department would evaluate the tenders in August.

A decision will be made in September, and it is expected to take a year to implement the national post code system.

Meanwhile, new research to be published soon by the Government says that one in five Irish adults has never used the internet.

The new digital strategy, to be published by Mr Rabbitte, was approved by Cabinet last night.

It also reveals that 19% of Irish households do not have access to the internet.
