Gardaí have removed a package containing ammunition from An Post’s Mails Centre and National Parcel Hub in Portlaoise, Co Laois.

The centre was evacuated for a number of hours after a parcel of historical ammunition was discovered by Customs officers who also work at the centre.

The ammunition was examined by members of the Army Bomb Disposal team and found to be inert.

The scene has been declared safe and gardaí have taken possession of the parcel.

It is understood the contents of the package were declared on the outside.

An Post said its facility has reopened, however there will be disruption to its postal service as crucial processing time was lost.
