A 47-year-old Polish man has been charged with the murder of Bogdan Michalkiewicz in Co Donegal last month.

Dariusz Weckowicz, of no fixed abode, appeared at Carndonagh District Court charged with murdering Mr Michalkiewicz between 13 and 15 May at Westside Apartments, Lower Main Street in Letterkenny.

He was remanded in custody to appear at Harristown District Court on 21 June.

Mr Weckowicz denied killing Mr Michalkiewicz, who was originally from Poland.

Sergeant Michael Carroll told the court that Mr Weckowicz was arrested at Letterkenny Garda Station at 11.55am and charged at 12.05pm.

His solicitor, Kieran Dillon, queried the timeframe of Mr Weckowicz's detention, who was free to leave Letterkenny Garda Station at 11.14am before being rearrested and charged at 11.55am.

The court heard that the defendant was outside the station smoking a cigarette in the intervening period and Mr Dillon said there might be issues in the future concerning Mr Weckowicz's detention.

An interpreter was made available to Mr Weckowicz in court and Judge Paul Kelly granted legal aid.
