Former South African president and anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela remains in a "serious but stable" condition after being admitted to hospital four days ago with a lung infection.

A government statement this afternoon said President Jacob Zuma had been briefed by doctors about Mr Mandela's condition.

It said he was satisfied that they were "doing their best to make Madiba better".

In South Africa, Mr Mandela is commonly referred to by his clan name, Madiba.
