A murder inquiry has been launched following the death of a 41-year-old man who sustained serious head injuries following an assault in Co Galway last week.

The victim has been named as Krzysztof Ciesielski, who was originally from Poland, but had been living in Ireland for some time.

He was taken to Galway University Hospital following the incident at a housing estate in Athenry last Thursday night.

Mr Ciesielski later died at the hospital.

Gardaí have arrested four people in connection with the assault.

A man in his late 40s is being held at Gort Garda Station.

A woman in her 30s and two teenage boys are being questioned at Mill Street Garda Station in Galway.

Gardaí say they are not seeking anyone else in connection with the inquiry.
