A former Lord Mayor of Cork has appeared before Cork District Court charged with six counts of sexual assault.

John Murray was mayor, representing the Labour Party, between 1993 and 1994.

He faces six charges of sexually assaulting a person on dates between 1996 and 1998.

Mr Murray, of Gregg Road, Cork, denied the charges.

He was released on bail for two weeks, after which he is expected to be served with a book of evidence in the case.

Judge Leo Malone adjourned the case until 12 June.
