A 26-year-old man has appeared in court charged with assaulting a man whose body was found at an apartment complex in Cork city last week.

David O'Loughlin, from City Garden Apartments in North Main Street, was charged with assault causing harm to Liam Manley, 58, at the City Garden complex on 12 May.

Mr Manley's body was discovered near an internal refuse chute on the ground floor of the complex on 13 May.

Detective Garda Katrine Tansley told Cork District Court that Mr O'Loughlin made no reply when she arrested and charged him with assaulting Mr Manley.

Judge Leo Malone granted free legal aid after he was told Mr O'Loughlin was unemployed. He was remanded in custody until next Thursday.
