Gardaí have begun a murder investigation following the discovery of a man's body in Tallaght in Dublin last night.

The 37-year-old was found shot dead in a field near Killanarden Hill at around 9pm.

The area remains sealed off for a forensic examination.

A post mortem examination carried out this afternoon confirmed that the man died from a gunshot wound to the head.

It is understood the victim was under investigation in connection with a firearms seizure in Tallaght almost three weeks ago.

Three rifles, a handgun and two sawn-off shotguns along with a large amount of ammunition was found during a search of a house in the Kilclare area.

The man was not previously known to gardaí who believe he was storing the guns for gangland criminals.

The man had been reported missing for a number of weeks before his body was discovered.
