A five-year-old boy has died following an accident at his home near White's Cross in Co Cork.

Emergency services were alerted just after 1.30pm this afternoon.

It is understood that a fireplace fell on the child.

He was taken to Cork University Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.

Investigating gardai have confirmed they are treating the boy's death as a tragic accident.
