Minister for Health James Reilly has said he hopes to bring a memo to Cabinet shortly on plain packaging for tobacco products.

He made the announcement as he published a plan of 64 actions to improve the health and well-being of people in the country.

The Healthy Ireland document lists 64 inter-sectoral actions that a Cabinet committee on social policy will oversee.

The plan seeks to increase by 5% the number of adults and by 6% the number of children with a healthy weight by 2019.

It promises to reduce the level of smoking by 1% a year and cut the level of alcohol consumption.

The plan seeks to increase by 20% the proportion of the population that undertakes regular physical activity.

It involves co-operation between Government departments, the Health Service Executive, local authorities, businesses and community groups.
