A 42-year-old man who came into contact with a 14-year-old girl through Facebook and went on to sexually exploit her has been sentenced to nine years in prison.

Cathal Donnelly, with addresses at Carane, Ballintubber, Castlerea, Co Roscommon, and Tullyrane, Ballymahon Road, Lanesboro, Co Longford, pleaded guilty to the sexual exploitation of a minor on dates between 1 August 2010 and 29 September 2010 at an earlier sitting of the Roscommon Circuit Criminal Court this year.

Donnelly had also pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography at Tullyrane on 29 September 2010; to the distribution of child pornography on 30 April 2010, and to the production of child pornography on a date between 26 May 2010 and 26 August 2010.

A further 12 charges before the court were taken into consideration.

Reporting restrictions were applied to protect the identity of the teenage girl in the case.

The court heard that Donnelly came to the attention of gardaí in 2010 after he was detected by Scottish police authorities in a sting operation.

He had been intercepted by an undercover policewoman while making contact with teenage girls on internet chat rooms.
