Eight people have appeared before Virginia District Court in Co Cavan arising from an undercover garda operation targeting the supply of drugs in the Bailieboro area.

Operation Nettle involved both local and national garda units.

Four of the eight today pleaded guilty to various charges in relation to the possession and supply of drugs.

Noel McHugh, 22, from Woodview Estate in Bailieboro was sentenced to eight months imprisonment, while Patrick Clarke, 37, from Tandragee, Bailieboro was given a six-month suspended sentence. He was also fined €500.

Diane McCabe, 29, of Woodview, Bailieboro, was given a six-month suspended sentence and fined €500, while Marian Owens, 24, from Curkish, Bailieboro, was given an eight-month suspended sentence.

She was also fined €1,000 by Judge Seán MacBride.

Four others, who pleaded not guilty to a variety of charges, had their cases put back to next month for hearing.
