Last permanent resident leaves Inishfree island

The last permanent resident on Inishfree off the coast of Donegal has left the island to return to England.

Barry Pilcher, 70, left quietly this morning after living there for over 20 years.

His wife returned to London some time ago because of their daughter's education.

Mr Pilcher is an artist and plays the saxophone.

He decided in January that it was time to leave the island for a number of reasons, including his wife's ill health and loneliness.

He said there would be many things he would miss about the island.
