The PSNI has discovered what it says appears to be a mortar bomb type device in west Belfast.

The device was discovered at around 7am on waste ground near a primary school on the Ballygomartin Road.

It is thought the intended target of the device may have been New Barnsley Police Station.

A number of homes and two primary schools in the area were evacuated.

British army bomb disposal experts examined the device.
