A Co Wexford transport company has been fined €1m after pleading guilty to safety matters when one of its trucks shed its load resulting in the death of two women.

Vanessa McGarry and Mary Lonergan died five years ago when a Nolan Tranport truck lost its load of heavy coils near Thomastown in Co Kilkenny.

Judge Raymond Fullam said the company was guilty of a gross dereliction in relation to its statutory duty to road users.

He said there had been a flagrant disregard of safety.

He gave the company three years to pay the €1m fine.
