A search for a Spanish fisherman who fell overboard from his trawler 60km southwest of Castletownbere in west Cork has been scaled down.

It is believed the man was not wearing a life jacket when he fell from the Spanish-registered trawler, the Ecce Homo, around 4.15am.

Castletownbere and Baltimore lifeboats were sent to the scene at 5am, but later returned to base.

Naval vessels, the LE Aisling and the LE Emer, as well as the Shannon-based Rescue 115 helicopter, and some local trawlers also took part in the search operation.
