A large number of both clergy and the general public attended the funeral mass of the late Archbishop of Tuam, Dr Joseph Cassidy, 79, in the Cathedral of Assumption in Tuam.

The former Archbishop had served the Diocese of Clonfert for 28 years, five years of that time was served as Bishop, before he moved to Tuam in 1987.

His successor and the main celebrant at the funeral mass today, Dr Michael Neary, said that the large crowds who gathered to pay their respects throughout the wake and funeral mass was indicative of the high esteem in which Dr Cassidy was held.

He was buried afterwards in the grounds of Moore Church, where he served as Parish Priest following his retirement.
