Strong winds leave thousands without powerThursday 31 January 2013 23.25
About 7,000 homes were without power earlier due to damage caused by strong winds overnight.
The worst affected area was the southwest, where around 5,000 customers, mainly in Killarney in Co Kerry and Bandon in Co Cork, lost supply.
ESB network crews have been working to make repairs and restore power to homes, however continuing high winds delayed this process in some areas, particularly in the southwest.
One of the worst-affected areas overnight was Oughterard in Co Galway, but power has since been restored there.
Strong winds have also led to the closure of the Harry Blaney bridge in north Donegal.
Donegal County Council has closed the bridge over Mulroy Bay until further notice for safety reasons.
