Gardaí have appealed for witnesses after a teenage girl was assaulted and found in a semi-conscious state in Kinsale, Co Cork, last night.

The 18-year-old was found at Compass Quay at 10.30pm after calling a friend to say she thought she was being followed.

It is understood the young woman had left home at around 9.30pm to go for a walk along a popular local walking route to Dromderrig Bridge.

The victim told gardaí she had been attacked and struck from behind.

She was taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment.

As a precautionary measure, she was later taken to the Sexual Assault Unit at the South Infirmary-Victoria Hospital for examination.

Meanwhile, gardaí have cordoned off the area and a forensic examination of the scene is being carried out.

They have appealed to anyone who might have seen or heard anything between 9.30pm and 11pm to contact them in Kinsale on 021-4772302 or in Bandon on 023-8852200.
