A man, who was injured while out walking in southwest Donegal yesterday afternoon, was taken to hospital following a 12-hour rescue operation.

The injured Carlow man raised the alarm on his mobile phone just after 1pm yesterday after falling on the Slieve League cliffs.

A rescue team lifted the 28-year-old from a cliff face after the Sligo-based coast guard helicopter had been unable to evacuate him for treatment.

The man was taken by ambulance to Sligo General Hospital suffering non-life threatening injuries to his back and a flesh wound to his leg.
