Homes have been evacuated in east Belfast after a suspected viable explosive device was discovered under a policeman's car.

British Army bomb experts were called to deal with the device which was discovered under the car on the Upper Newtownards Road.

The PSNI says the unexploded device planted under the serving police officers car had been placed there in the last 48 hours.

Assistant Chief Constable George Hamilton said he believed the attempted murder was carried out by dissident republicans, and he appealed for information about the incident from the public.

A local church hall has been opened to accommodate people moved from their homes.

The Upper Newtownards Road was closed to traffic between the Knock Road junction and Cabin Hill Park.
