A 35-year-old man has been shot dead in Dublin.

The man was dropped off at St James's Hospital with gunshot wounds.

He was pronounced dead a short time later.

Detectives have begun a murder investigation and have appealed for anyone with information to contact them at Kilmainham Garda Station on 01 666 9700.

The car that was used to drop the man at hospital was found a short distance away on Cork Street, Dublin 8 and the area has been preserved for a technical examination.

The victim was a prolific burglar and had convictions for larceny, drugs and public order offences.

He was also a target of Operation Acer, set up to target those involved in burglaries in the city.

Gardaí are also examining an area on Constitution Hill as a possible location for the shooting.
