Donal Nevin passed away on Sunday at the age of 88

The funeral has taken place in Dublin of Donal Nevin, a former general secretary of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions.

Mr Nevin passed away on Sunday aged 88. He is survived by his wife Maura and his daughter Anne.

Giving the eulogy, former SIPTU president Billy Attley praised Mr Nevin's commitment to public service during his long career.

Both President Michael D Higgins and Taoiseach Enda Kenny were represented at the funeral, which was also attended by Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore and Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton.

Trade unionists in attendance included current ICTU General Secretary David Begg, SIPTU officers Patricia King and Joe O'Flynn, IMPACT General Secretary Shay Cody, General Secretary of the Public Service Executive Union Tom Geraghty, General Secretary of the Civil Public and Services Union Eoin Ronayne, and the General Secretary of the Communications Workers Union Steve Fitzpatrick.

Chairman of the Labour Court Kevin Duffy and Labour Court members Brendan Hayes and Jerry Shanahan also attended, as did retired trade unionists including Des Geraghty, Peter McLoone, Peter Cassells and Blair Horan.
