NASA has prematurely released a video explaining why the world did not come to an end on 21 December, 2012.

The video was made in response to hundreds of queries it received from people wondering if the end of the world was near and what they should do about it.

A prophecy based on an interpretation of the ancient Mayan calendar claims the world will end in a few days time.

However, NASA is so confident that the apocalypse will not happen that it has released a video ahead of schedule.

The conspiracy backers already questioned why the video - titled Why the World Didn't End Yesterday - was published more than a week before the due date.

"If you are watching this video then that means one thing... the world didn't end yesterday," the video begins.

In addition to the four-minute explainer video, NASA also has a dedicated website that has received at least 4.6 million visitors.
