The National Crime Victims Helpline has said the number of people contacting them has increased by 12% year-on-year.
In its annual report for 2011, it said there were 3,253 contacts, 2,868 by phone and 385 by email, text and fax.
Of those contacting the helpline, 67% were female and 33% were male.
The crime that led to most calls being made to the helpline was assault, followed by sexual violence, and property related crime such as robbery and burglary.
