A decision on the future of a Co Longford airfield has been deferred by the local county council.

The council was expected to decide on plans that could see the air strip in the village of Abbeyshrule extended to cater for 32-seater passenger aircraft and smaller cargo planes last week.

However, the council has now submitted a request for further information.

The planning permission application includes details of an extension of the current runway at Abbeyshrule by 300m, as well as widening it by between 18m and 23m.

Permission is also being sought for a new taxiway, just over 1km long.
