A 74-year-old man has died in a house fire at Rathcormac near Fermoy in Co Cork.

He has been named locally as Timothy Arnold.

The fire at the terraced house was noticed by a member of the public at around 8pm last night.

Emergency services were called and it took at least three fire service units several hours to bring the blaze under control.

The house was extensively damaged in the blaze.

The man's body was taken to Cork University Hospital where a post mortem examination has been carried out.

It is not known how the fire started but it is not being treated as suspicious.
