A British Airways flight from the US to Britain made an unscheduled landing at Shannon Airport early this morning.

The Boeing 777 aircraft was en route from Philadelphia to London Heathrow when smoke was detected in the cabin about 1,000km west of the Irish coast.

The pilot declared an emergency and requested permission to divert to Shannon.

The plane landed safely at around 6am.
