Fisherman rescued off Co Cork coast

A man has been rescued after his fishing vessel sank off the coast of Co Cork tonight.

Valentia Coast Guard said it received a report shortly before nine o'clock that the 11-metre vessel was taking on water 1.5km south of Guileen, on the east side of Cork Harbour.

The Crosshaven and Ballycotton Lifeboats were sent to the scene. A fishing vessel that was nearby at the time also responded.

When they arrived on scene, the skipper - the only occupant of the vessel - had escaped to a life raft.

He was taken on board the Crosshaven Lifeboat and taken to Crosshaven, arriving at around 9.15pm.

Valentia Coast Guard said the man was uninjured and did not require hospital treatment.
